Raising Awareness of Liver & Pancreas Cancer – Sunday 15th June 2014

The HPB unit in Leicester carries out a number of research projects on liver and pancreas cancer with the aim of promoting early diagnosis and improving the treatment and outcome of patients suffering from these dreadful conditions.

Unfortunately liver and pancreas cancers lack the profile that some other cancers presently have. Most people have never heard of, or know very little about these cancers unless a family member, friend or celebrity has been affected by it. Funding for research in this area is therefore hard to come by.

On Sunday the 15th of June surgeons and nurses from the Leicester General Hospital HPB Unit held a liver and pancreas cancer awareness event at the clock tower in Leicester. Our team set up a stand at the clock tower which provided information about liver and pancreas cancers. A member of the HPB team made a papier-mâché liver model which he wore on that day to help educate the general public about liver cancer. We also had a quiz board display of celebrities who had been affected by these cancers.

We attracted at great deal of interest and were very appreciative of the generosity of the Leicester public who turned out to support us at the clock tower. We raised over £400 for liver and pancreas cancer research on that day alone.
